Listen and Predict – あげく

～あげく (~After)

The beginning of the phrase expresses longtime anguish or trouble over something, while the latter of phrase expresses the situations as it is presently. [see more]

NEGATIVE

The phrase expresses that one’s expectation was not met. Ex:

さんざん悩なやんだあげく、謝あやまることにした。
After being plagued to death, I eventually decided to apologize.

POSITIVE

The phrase expresses improvement in one’s condition. Ex:

日本への留学りゅうがくを周囲しゅういから反対はんたいされたが、説得せっとくしたあげく、やっと認みとめてもらえた。
Although people close to me objected to my plan to study in Japan, I finnally convinced them and got their approval.
