You usually use ものだ to state an obvious fact, or to say that you used to do something in the past.

 Formations 

Verb-casual, past + ものだ: used to do something
Verb-dictionary form + ものだ: social norm/an obvious fact

 Examples  

子供のとき、よく川で遊んだものです
Kodomo no toki, yoku kawa de asonda monodesu.
I used to play by the river a lot when I was a kid.

借りたものは返すものです
Karita mono wa kaesu monodesu.
You should pay what you owe.

習慣というものは恐ろしいものです
Shūkan to iu mono wa osoroshī monodesu.
The force of habit is strong.
