You usually use ものだ to state an obvious fact, or to say that you used to do something in the past.

Formations
Verb-casual, past + ものだ: used to do something
Verb-dictionary form + ものだ: social norm/an obvious fact
Examples
子供のとき、よく川で遊んだものです。
Kodomo no toki, yoku kawa de asonda monodesu.
I used to play by the river a lot when I was a kid.
借りたものは返すものです。
Karita mono wa kaesu monodesu.
You should pay what you owe.
習慣というものは恐ろしいものです。
Shūkan to iu mono wa osoroshī monodesu.
The force of habit is strong.

Examples

謝ることはないよ。君が悪いわけじゃないんだもの。
Ayamaru koto wa nai yo.-Kun ga warui wake janai nda mono.
No need to apologize. You didn’t do anything wrong.
「ジャケットを脱ぐの」「だって、この部屋の中、暑いんだもの」
`Jaketto o nugu no’`datte, kono heya no naka, atsui nda mono’
“Are you taking off your jacket?” “because it’s hot in this room”

まるで + Noun + （の）ようだ
まるで + いadj + ようだ
まるで + なadj + なようだ
まるで can also be used with かのよう.
Examples
彼はまるで犯人を知っているかのように話をします。
Kare wa marude hannin o shitte iru ka no yō ni hanashi o shimasu.
He speaks as if he knew the criminal.
春なのに今日はとても寒くて、まるで冬に戻ったかのように私は感じます。
Harunanoni kyō wa totemo samukute, marude fuyu ni modotta ka no yō ni watashi wa kanjimasu.
Today it is so cold for Spring that I feel as if we had had a return of winter.
彼のドイツ語はまるでネイティヴ・スピーカーが話しているように自然に 聞こえます。
Kare no doitsugo wa marude neitivu supīkā ga hanashite iru yō ni shizen ni kikoemasu.
His German is so natural that he sounds like a native speaker.

彼はギターを弾けないくせに、弾けるふりをします。
Kare wa gitā o hikenai kuse ni, hajikeru furi o shimasu.
Even though he can’t play the guitar, he pretends that he can.
