車 /kuruma/ Car

その車くるまは動うごこうとしなかった。
The car wouldn’t start.

「車くるま」は「自動車じどうしゃ」の同意語どういごです。
“Car” is a synonym of “automobile”.

電車 /densha/ Train

僕ぼくは終しゅう電車でんしゃに乗のり遅おくれた。
I was late for the last train.

僕ぼくは電車でんしゃを使つかって1時間じかんかかったよ。
It took me an hour by train.

バス /basu/ Bus

彼かれはバスで旅たびしています。
He’s travelling by bus.

約束やくそくの時間じかんに送おくれないようにバスに乗のった。
I took a bus so as not to be late for my appointment.

新幹線 /shinkansen/ Bullet train

台風たいふうのために新幹線しんかんせんが一時間いちじかんも遅おくれた。
The train was delayed for one hour due to the typhoon.

6時じの新幹線しんかんせんにまだ間まに合あうでしょうか。
Can we still catch the 6:00 Shinkansen?

飛行機 /hikouki/ Airplane

旅行りょこうするときは私わたしは飛行機ひこうきの方ほうを好このみます。
When I travel, I prefer to travel by air.

列車れっしゃで行いくのか飛行機ひこうきで行いくのか決きめなさい。
You must decide whether you will go by train or by airplane.

Have you ever played track and field?

卓球 /takkyuu/ Table tennis

ピンポンは卓球たっきゅうとも呼よばれている。
Ping-Pong is also called table tennis.

いくら年ねんをとってもまだ卓球たっきゅうをやる元気げんきはある。
No matter how old I get, I’ll still have the energy to play table tennis.

It is in fashion now to have a straight perm.

すく /suku/ To comb hair

ポールは手てで髪かみをすきました。
Paul comb his hair with his hand.

私わたしは櫛くしで髪かみをすいています。
I’m combing my hair with a comb.

坊主 /bouzu/ Skin head (bald)

彼かれは坊主ぼうずになった。
He has his head shaved. 

途中とちゅうで坊主ぼうず頭がしらの男おとこの人ひとにあった。
I met a bald man on the way.

ロン毛 /ronge/ Long haired man

なぜロン毛げにしたか。
Why did you grow long hair?

彼かれはロン毛げになってかっこいいです。
He looks handsome with long hair.

前髪 /maegami/ Bangs

前髪まえがみは短みじかく切きりすぎないでください。
Don’t cut my bangs too short.

若わかい女性じょせいの間あいだで、前髪まえがみをクルクルさせるのは、モードではない。
It’s not the mode for young girls to curl their bangs.

美容室 /biyoushitsu/ Beautician

彼女かのじょは美容室びようしつに行いった。
She went to the beautician’s.

明日あした美容室びようしつへ行いきます。
I’ll go to the beautician’s tomorrow.

床屋 /tokoya/ Barber

床屋とこやに行いって髪かみを刈かってもらいなさい。
Go to the barber’s to have your hair cut.

私わたしは床屋とこやで散髪さんぱつした。
I had my hair cut at the barber’s.

にわか雨 /niwakaame/ Drizzling rain

私わたしは途中とちゅうでにわか雨あめにあった。
I was caught in a drizzling rain on the way.

天気予報てんきよほうによればにわか雨あめが降ふるそうだ。
The weather forecast says there’ll be drizzling rain.

大雨 /ooame/ Heavy rain

明日あしたはきっと大雨おおあめが降ふるだろう。
We anticipate a heavy rainfall tomorrow.

大雨おおあめは洪水こうずいとなって被害ひがいを与あたえた。
The heavy rain brought the flood, causing damage.

土砂降り /doshaburi/ Downpour

土砂降りどしゃぶりの雨あめだ。
It’s raining cats and dogs.

雨あめが降ふれば必からなず土砂降りどしゃぶり。
If it rains, it will definitely pour.

横殴りの雨 /yokogurinoame/ Lying rain

横よこ殴ぐりの雨あめに打うたれた。
I was hit by a lying rain.

お天気雨 /otenkiame/ Sun shower

お天気雨てんきあめとは日ひが照てっているのに雨あめが降ふること。
Sun shower is when it rains even when the sun is shining.

虹 /niji/ Rainbow

彼女かのじょのドレスは虹にじの色いろのほとんどがろっている。
Her dresses show most of the colors of the rainbow.

虹にじは空そらに弓状きゅうじょうにかかる。
The rainbow forms an arc in the sky.

Bon, an annual Buddhist event, is from July 13th to the 16th.

梅雨 /tsuyu/ Rainy season (June)

早はやく梅雨つゆ明けないかなあ。
I wish the rainy season would end soon.

梅雨つゆらしく空そらはどんよりしている。
The sky is gloomy and gray, a typical rainy-season sky.
